Introduction

This is a reconstruction of the Backrooms concept. While it does draw a lot of inspiration from existing Backrooms media, external material is not automatically canon. Concepts and content from other works may be adapted, altered, or discarded.

Terms

The Interstitium is a structural consciousness surrounding the expanse of universes and dimensions that make up reality. It works as a “heat sink” that absorbs excess entropy from universes. The Interstitium is achronic, there is no “past” or “future” as all states exist in the present.

Nodes are localized crystallizations of the entropy universes excrete. Through the filtering process of the Interstitium, it is processed into schemas — patterns of meaning, behavior, physical laws, symbols, architecture, and archetypes derived from every universe’s sentient beings. They are fully processed outputs, and frequently resemble human-made environments; this is because anthropoid intelligences are a common sentient archetype across many universes.

Child Nodes
Child Nodes form when parts of the schema a node was made from are excessively dense or otherwise harder to process, leading to a breaking off of the Parent Node. Most Nodes are Leaf Nodes with no children, or Branch Nodes which bear one child. Nodes with two or more children — known as Sibling Nodes — are termed Tree Nodes, and are uncommon.
Nexus
A Nexus is a group of nodes, typically structured in numerical order up to 100 that have been seen as connected by various recurring and/or shared patterns.
Node 0
Node 0, given name, "The Backrooms", is the first node peregrini find themselves in. This is because it is the most stable and self-contained node, able to safely hold high-entropy matter without destabilizing.

Peregrini are those who have experienced an eventus, having been sent to The Interstitium. This term refers to them being displaced individuals.

When local conditions in an environment become unstable, as in entropy spikes, spatial or temporal anomalies appear, or a quantum instability occurs, The Interstitium seizes the irritant and transfers it to Node 0 to process it. When peregrini are accidentally caught during this process, it is called an eventus.

Eveniring is the process of passing between nodes. This happens when a peregrinus disrupts a node, causing the Interstitium to move them to a child node or node with a similar schema to resolve the instability. This can be triggered by the peregrinus themselves, caused by their own schema, behavior; or it can be triggered by a peregrinus interacting with parts of the node, whether this be mentally or physically. Spots where it’s common are known as evenient points.
