The Interstitium is a structural consciousness surrounding the expanse of universes and dimensions that make up reality. It works as a sink that absorbs universal waste and filters it. It is a primordial process, however, The Interstitium itself is achronic; there is no “past” or “future” — all states exist in the present.
- Universal Waste
- Universal waste refers to aggregate thermodynamic, informational, probabilistic, causal, ontological, cognitive, and structural byproducts leftover from a universe’s natural operations. The Interstitium processes it by rendering it into nodes.
When local conditions in an environment become unstable, entropy spikes, spatial or temporal anomalies appear, or a quantum instability occurs, The Interstitium seizes the irritant and transfers it to Node 0 to process it. When a being is accidentally caught during this process, it is called an Eventus.
Peregrini are those who have experienced an Eventus, having been sent to The Interstitium. This term refers to them being displaced individuals. When a Peregrinus dies, the leftover energy can create a mutated/new Ens (Peregrim), a mutated/new part of the Node (Grim Spot), or a new Child Node (Grim Node). It is extremely rare for two Peregrini to be in one Node at the same time, due to the massive expanse of the Interstitium and the small amount of actual Peregrini alive in the Interstitium.
- Lexicon
- Peregrinus, Peregrini (“The Peregrinus opened a door.”, “Short Peregrini have an advantage in Node 372.”)
- Female form: Peregrina, Peregrinae
- Male form: Peregrin, Peregrins
- Adjective: Peregrinum (“Being peregrinum never leaves you.”)
Eveniring is the process of passing between nodes. This happens when a Peregrinus disrupts a node, causing the Interstitium to move them to a connected node. This can be triggered by the Peregrinus themselves (as in their thoughts, feelings, unique signature) or by interacting with parts of the Node, whether this be mentally or physically. Spots where eveniring is common are known as evenient points.
- Lexicon
- Infinitive: Evenire (“I am going to evenire.”)
- Present singular: Evenires (“She evenires.”)
- Present participle: Eveniring (“He is eveniring.”)
- Past: Evenired (“I evenired.”)
- Adjective: Evenient (“That chair is evenient.”)
- Evenientia
- Evenientia is a temporary illness caused by eveniring. Symptoms include fatigue, disorientation, malaise, lethargy, itching, migraine, nausea, vertigo, tremors, visual distortions, and dissociation.
- Lexicon
- Adjective: Eveniential (“He's eveniential.”)
Nodes are crystallizations of filtered universal waste, and is the last step in The Interstitium’s process. This system is constant; Nodes are created perpetually, meaning that there is an infinite amount of nodes. When parts of the waste are excessively dense, volatile, or aberrant, the Node may break off, becoming something known as a Child Node. When this happens, the original Node is known as a Parent Node. Though uncommon, Parent Nodes can bear multiple Child Nodes, especially when created from a Peregrinus's death. When multiple Child Nodes are from the same Parent Node, they are referred to as Sibling Nodes.
- Resonant Nodes
- When a Node has the same universe of origin as a Peregrinus, Peregrini can follow this resonance; Eveniring into other resonant nodes and potentially back to their universe.
- Grim Spots & Grim Nodes
- A Grim Spot is a place in a Node affected or created by a Peregrinus’s death. A Grim Node is a Child Node created from a Peregrinus's death. The conditions of these Grim Spots and Grim Nodes vary widely, mostly based on how the Peregrinus died, their personality, and/or their life.
- Nexus
- A Nexus is a group of nodes that have the same native universe, have close native universes, or were processed at the same time.
- Node 0
- Node 0, given name, "The Backrooms", is the first Node that Peregrini find themselves in, due to the process known as an Eventus. It is The Interstitium itself, and connects to every Node.
Entia are concentrations of universal waste that are too dynamic, and cannot integrate into static node structure. An Entia created from a peregrinus’s death is known as a Peregrims.
- Lexicon
- Singular: Ens
- Plural: Entia
- Singular: Peregrim
- Plural: Peregrims
- The Interstitium
- A primordial, achronic space that envelops all universes. Its function is to absorb and filter Universal Waste.
- Universal Waste
- The collected aggregate byproducts generated by universes.
- Nodes
- These are crystallized structures formed within the Interstitium from filtered Universal Waste.
- Resonant Nodes: Nodes created from the waste of a specific universe. A Peregrinus originating from that same universe experiences resonance, and can follow this resonance; Eveniring into other resonant nodes and potentially back to their universe.
- Child Nodes: Separate structures that break off from a main Node. This occurs when a segment of waste being processed is excessively dense or aberrant.
- Node 0 - "The Backrooms": The initial or first-formed Node.
- Eventus
- When the Interstitium acts to seize and process an irritant causing unstable conditions in a universe. When a being is caught in this process, it is an Eventus.
- Peregrini
- Beings who have undergone an Eventus, having been sent to the Interstitium.
- Grimation
- The residual energy released upon a Peregrinus's death causes Grimation. This resultsin a mutation or creation influenced by the deceased Peregrinus's life, personality, and death. Types of Grimation:
- Peregrim: A new or mutated Ens.
- Grim Spot: A new or mutated section of the Node the Peregrinus died in.
- Grim Node: A new Child Node.
- Eveniring
- The act of passing between Nodes. It is triggered when a Peregrinus disrupts a Node, prompting the Interstitium to move them to a connected Node.
This project is subject to tons of change and revisions. If the changes are extreme enough, I will make archived versions.
